Markus Bishko, MM
Biographical Statement
Markus Bishko, MM was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1960, and grew up studying music in the Western Classical tradition.
As an undergraduate at Northwestern University, his interests turned to literature and languages. After receiving my B.A., Markus resided for 2 years in Italy, where he worked first as a producer of children’s puppet theater in Sardinia then as a childcare tutor in Rome, where he studied ceramic sculpture and art history. Music returned to his life as he supplemented his travel working as an improvising street musician.
Upon his return to the U.S.A., Markus continued to travel, perform and record with SATTA, a reggae/world beat band in the States, Europe, East Asia, and the South Pacific. During this period he composed, arranged and recorded songs in world beat styles; as well as performed with various salsa, afro-pop and blues bands.
In Alaska since 1990, Markus developed a residential music therapy program with chronically mentally ill adults, as well as individual work with emotionally disturbed and developmentally disabled adolescents. The American Association for Music Therapy published his paper on this work, and Markus presented at the AAMT national conference in 1994.
At New England Conservatory, Markus received his Master’s degree in Third Stream Studies-- a program developed by Gunther Schuller and Ran Blake based on extensive multicultural ear training and development of personal style through improvisation. Among the extraordinary experiences at NEC were studies of flute technique with Abby Rabinovitz, John Heiss, and Paula Robeson; development of personal style with Hankus Netsky, Abby Rabinovitz, and Ran Blake; theory and composition with Joseph Gabriel Esther Maneri and George Russell. Markus is especially indebted to the mentorship of Hankus Netsky in his rediscovery of klezmer music-- restoring the future of the flute’s voice in klezmer remains one of his priorities.
Markus teaches Music and Italian classes at Matanuska-Susitna College of the University of Alaska Anchorage. He is well known locally as a teacher and performer in many styles of music, ranging from classical to klezmer.
Markus and Victoria Bishko continue to maintain their international reputation as performers and presenters of klezmer music, including recent performances in New Zealand, Italy, and the National Flute Association Convention in Atlanta.
