The Aurora Academy

The Fife and Drum of The Aurora Academy is the first group of its kind in the State of Alaska. Fife and Drum is an ancient tradition of military music, which symbolizes to many the time of the American Revolution-the most successful democratic revolution ever, and the first and only democratic revolution in the history of the world that did not end in totalitarian dictatorship.
The fife-a small, shrill flute-accompanied by the drum was used to give signals in battlefields from the Middle Ages through the late 19th Century. They featured prominently in our own Revolutionary and Civil Wars, as well as the War of 1812. Fifers and Drummers from various regiments would gather in larger corps for parades to express pride and excitement in our national accomplishments. They would even play for dancing.
The members of The Fife and Drum-men, women, and children from all walks of Alaskan life-come together in proud unity to re-create the music of our nation's history. Members attend weekly classes at The Aurora Academy of Cultural Fine Arts to learn to play and march. The background of our tradition and its role in American History is also taught, and has generated much enthusiasm for the subject among our younger members.
Our group is available for parades, ceremonies, and events, many of which are unremunerated. The Fife and Drum welcomes sponsorship by local businesses, corporations, organizations, and individuals.
Playing in the Fife and Drum is a wonderful introduction to music. Instrument costs and membership fees are very low-
a great alternative to school band programs!
As a member of The Fife and Drum of The Aurora Academy,
home school credit is available in music and history.
